Being a Home Health or Homecare Leader can be stressful if you have never been in a leadership position, and now as the owner or new manager or administrator, you find yourself wondering what to do and how to lead your staff.  For me, it was an easy transition to go from field nurse for several home health agencies to the Director of Clinical Services for several agencies.

As the Director of Clinical Services for the first agency I was at, I relied on skills I learned while in the Army Reserves and what I saw from a few positive role models at different agencies. It took time to develop what would work and what didn’t work. But as time went by and from going to a few other agencies. I developed the ability to lead with confidence.

Now as the owner of Optimal Healthcare Solutions, I have learned some valuable lessons I want to share with you. There are 5 Habits Amazing Leaders do that make them very successful in their business or in life. These habits have people look up to them.

Here are 3 habits of successful people I follow:

1. Take time to be quiet. First thing in the morning or in your office, just don’t think about anything, just sit quietly to let information just fill your mind. Let creative juices flow you’re your mind. Spend time connecting with your heart, gut, and your head every day. The people you are leading deserve to have you show up with a clear mind to leave.

2. Don’t start your day on your cellphone, or on the Internet. Focus on you or your family. You might meditate, pray, exercise, read, or spend time with your spouse or kids. The possibilities for starting the day healthier are endless.

3. Lead with Positive Energy! I love greeting everyone with a smile no matter what is going on in my life. Smiling create positive energy needed to solve problems, handle situations, and motivate your staff to want to work with you and for you.

4. Don’t expect to always have the correct answers. They understand that leading is not about providing all the answers, it’s about ensuring the best answer will try to be found and implemented.  Focus on trying to find solutions to problems and not someone to blame for problems that arise.

5. Successful Leaders are Confident, and not arrogant. You know what you are doing, you are happy to be doing what you want to do, and you have a plan to achieve your goals. What a good leader does, is not flaunt their success in front of their staff or others.

Remember, “The devil is in the detail”, so your devils need to be identified and addressed to allow you to grow your agency.
