People are quitting their homecare or home health jobs and pursuing new careers, causing a huge problem for the home care and home health industry. Many caregivers leave because of the lack of respect from their employer and the client. Employees complained about the office culture to the disrespect from the clients.
In a recent survey most home health or homecare administrators lacked the skills to know how to properly handle the client without losing them, so they take the easy road of fussing at the caregiver who ultimately quit their job to start their own agency or work somewhere else they think is better.
In 2021 some employees left because of the COVID vaccine mandate and continue to not work in the health field due to the fear of getting COVID-19 or having to take the vaccine. With the lack of employees affecting all industries, home health and homecare leaders have had to cut back on taking any new clients. Some leaders are doing the work of several people such as covering clients needing care, working the front desk, and their own duties. I’m not telling you anything new, I’m sure you may have already experienced one or all of the problems related to lack of staff.
With the lack of staff, how can an agency carry on and still make enough money to survey the tsunami of employees leaving the workplace? Here are a few tips to start.
- During the orientation phase always make your employees feel valued. Let them know and understand your brand and mission statement.
- Have an office culture of acceptance. Try to hire people from all nationalities. This helps people feel comfortable in their new job to see others who may be of their nationality.
- Encourage staff to take courses to improve their skills or self-worth.
- Have various fun activities to improve employee morale and increase productivity.
- Give Employee Recognition
- Create team-building activities
