5-Blunders That Can Affect Your Agency!

In this post, I want to take a look at 5 things that can affect the growth and success of your agency. Some of these things you may question if they really can affect the growth of your agency. Let’s look at the 5-Blunders a little more in detail.

  1. Not knowing and understanding what a good leader really is. Some newbies in the home health or homecare industry believe that because they are the owner they can go around their office and want their staff to acknowledge them as the “Boss”. Being acknowledged as the boss is not what you want. What you want is for your staff and clients to acknowledge you as a good leader of your organization. Being a great leader lets everyone know who is in charge and who the “boss’ really is.

  1. Failure to set goals for the growth and success of your agency. If your goals aren’t written down, then it’s just a dream. Benjamin Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” This is a business success quote many business owners go by. Get a notebook, create your SMART Goals, and take the actions you need to grow your agency.

  1. Take Care of Yourself! Not having enough staff or clients is very stressful, which can bring about many healthcare issues. Take time for yourself by going on 1 Day Retreats, listening to smooth music, hiring qualified office staff, visiting your primary care physician at least once a year for a check-up, and reading books on success 7 prosperity, or the Law of Attraction.

  1. Not adequately training your staff! A great way to fail your state survey is by not training your staff. When surveyors come to your office and talk with your staff about their training experience, they need to be able to tell the surveyors in detail the topics that were covered in orientation and during in-services. Don’t forget to cover the required topics. Don’t rely on the online training companies for your training. There are 3 topics that you should ensure the staff has live training on and they are: Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control, and First Aid.

  1. Last, Depending entirely on Medicaid or Medicare as your payment source. Ok, my motto is “Stop depending on the Government!” The worse thing businesses can do is to rely on the government for anything. All the government has to do is to stop paying you because the legislators are fighting over the budget. Here in Denver agencies had to close because Medicaid failed to pay agencies for 6 months. The owners were not prepared and had no backup plan and some couldn’t get any business loans. They had to close. A great financial plan is to have both private pay, VA and Medicaid or Medicare if you are a medical agency.
